On the 2014 Manufacturing and Logistics National Report Card, by the Center for Business and Economic Research, Indiana received A grades in manufacturing industry health, logistics industry health, tax climate and global reach. It has had A grades in these categories since 2011.

Highways

St. Joseph County is centrally located between the metropolitan areas of Chicago (96 miles), Indianapolis (138 miles) and Detroit (215 miles). It is truly at the crossroads of America and the Midwest—80% of the U.S. and Canadian populations can be reached within a one-day drive, making it second only to Harrisburg, Pa. for population reach.

Our reach is enabled by Interstate 80/90 (Indiana Toll Road), the longest interstate highway which runsalong the northern boundary of the county. Interstate 80 runs from downtown San Francisco, Calif., to Teaneck, N.J., in the New York Metro area. Interstate 90 runs from Seattle, Wash., to Boston, Mass. Indiana has 14 interstates that crisscross the state, making it first in the U.S. for interstate highway access.

 

Freight Rail

Freight rail carriers in the county include Norfolk Southern, CSX and South Shore Freight, a short-line railroad servicing Chicago, the Port of Chicago and Northwest and North Central Indiana. The rail switching yard, located in adjacent Elkhart County, is the second largest switching yard in the nation.

 

Ports

Indiana has three ports and ranks 14th in the country in foreign and domestic waterborne shipping with70 million tons per year. The port at Burns Harbor, Ind., is in close proximity to South Bend (53 miles).

 

Air

The South Bend International Airport is the second busiest airport in the state with direct flights toNewark/New York City, Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis, Chicago (O’Hare), Las Vegas, Orlando/Sanford, St. Petersburg/Clearwater/Tampa Bay, Punta Gorde/Southwest Florida and Phoenix/Mesa. FedEx Express and UPS also have shipping operations at the airport.
